Ivana Muller Sharing

This years London Dance International is coming to a close and what fun it has been! Wendy Houstoun, Frauke Requardt and Fin Walker led exciting exploratory residencies; Ruth Zaporah held an intensive workshop week at Greenwich Dance and we all explored current movements between Dance, Theatre and Performance at the talk “What is it about Dance” yesterday.

In the final week of LDI, Chisenhale has the pleasure of welcoming Ivana Muller to the space to run a week long workshop exploring ideas of Engagement. On Friday the group of 16 artists working with Ivana will be sharing some of the work created during this week, with some drinks and chatting after in the lounge! If you want to come along just turn up at Chis at 4pm.

Housewarming Residencies

We selected our summer residency artists just over a week ago. These artists applied for a week's free space to explore their own practices during August. The selection panel was made up of two members and two of the office team. The following artists will be joining us for a residency. Have a look at their website/videos by clicking their name:

A big welcome to:

Dan Watson 16th - 20th August
Jamila Johnson Small 23rd -27th August
William Collins 5th-9th September

Keep your eyes and ears open for chances to come and see work in progress during their stay...
These wonderful artists also become members so watch out for more from them in the future!

Leila McMillan Summer Workshop

Homemade Commissions

We’ve changed the name… but its still the same! This year Homelands Festival becomes Homemade. Once again we will be offering small commissions of £1k for artists to create a piece of work with people from our local community… and boy what a beautiful community we live in!

Last year we commissioned:

  • Joseph Mercier to create work with an intergenerational group of gay residents
  • Athina Vahla to work with Repton Boys Boxing Club to research dance and boxing movement practice
  • Yael Lowenstein to work with older borough residents to create a dance film about changes in the borough since the war
  • Jenny Edbrooke to work with the East End Women’s Institute creating performance inspired by their own baking recipes

We will be launching the application process early August, but for now get your thinking caps to create projects that will work with real-life Tower Hamlets groups BUT also (and very importantly) support your own development and ideas as an artist! Competition was feirce last year so we are giving you a little pre-warning to come up with super smart ideas!

Finally there were a few cool members things that we wanted to draw your attention to:

Jean Abreu takes his powerful new show Inside to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue Zoo Roxy  and plays 6 dates with the amazing band 65 Days of Static… live… Yes LIVE! Chisenhale has supported this work.
http://www.jeanabreudance.com/

Jenny Edbrooke is presenting a sharing of her new work in progress Smalls at the space on the 26th of July 7pm. The show is about underwear and takes place in a large woven skirt of smalls! There are literally a handful of tickets left so give us a call to book: 0208 981 6617
http://www.jennyedbrooke.com/

Louise Mochia and a collection of pals, colleagues and generally all round cool dudes have set up a fantastic website for reviews, blogging and listings. Here at Chisenhale we think it is pretty darn good and have been using it a lot... why don't you?

For the past few months Chisenhale has been co-producing a piece of work with Artsadmin. Lucy Cash has been commissioned to create a piece of work at the V&A Museum of Childhood and has been working with a group of kids from Chisenhale Primary School and older borough residents from the Green Candle Seniors Dance Troupe to make this happen, And here is what its all about…

The V&A Museum of Childhood comes mysteriously to life after hours in a promenade performance and film installation created by artist and choreographer Lucy Cash with elders and children from Bethnal Green.

Use your key to enter another world behind the closed doors of the Museum and join professional dancers and local performers as they lead you on a visual journey through memories of childhood past and present.

Created specifically for the museum Sewing Your Shadow combines live movement, singing and drawing with film installation and design by Lucille Acevedo-Jones.

A T-Mobile Big Dance commission supported by London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

1) Job Vacancies!

Chisenhale Dance Space is seeking to fill 2 posts: Projects Assistant and Education Assistant.

The funding for this post comes directly from a Department of Works and Pensions scheme that aims to prevent people becoming long-term unemployed and is therefore only available to people aged 18-24 that have been on Jobseekers Allowance for 6 months or more. They would suit dance/performance/live art graduates looking to get their first job in an arts organisation. Both posts are 25 hours a week and hold a huge amount of development, training and mentoring potential to ensure the beginning of long term arts careers!

If you suit the strict criteria then please contact Bryony Kimmings on bryony@chisenhaledancespace.co.uk or 0208 981 6617 for more information on how to apply.

Deadline for both applications: 21st May
(Both posts are 6 month fixed contract)

2) Joseph Mercier Preview Performance 7/5/10

Chisenhale has co-produced Joseph Mercier's new piece "Giselle or I'm Too Horny to be a Prince". This work will preview at Chis on the 7th of May 2010 7:30pm. Tickets are priced at £5 and can be booked in the office: 0208 981 6617

Giselle, or I'm too horny to be a Prince is a contemporary remaining of the classical ballet in two distinct, but interrelated parts:

In Act One: Calgary, Giselle imprisons himself in his native Canadian city where, through imagery and submission, he relives his final attempt at classical form, his distaste for tights and 11 months without sex.
In Act Two: The Forest, Giselle is introduced to a gay prince with whom he dances a pas de deux. The duet turns sour when Giselle fails the Prince's lessons on masculinity, and the Prince is forced to resort to more drastic measures.

Set to the original score, Giselle, or I'm too horny to be a Prince draws a movement vocabulary from classical ballet, contemporary styles and sadomasochism, and straddles the line between dance and live art.

3) London Dance International Workshops

Here Come the Women!

This Year's London Dance International programme for July is about to Launch! Brochures are being printed as we speak...BUT Chisenhale can sneakily reveal that the artist that will be holding the weeklong workshop here at the space is Ivana Muller! How amazing is that!

We will be updating the website next week with the full brochure and the GDA box office will then open to the usual mad scramble of professional artists wanting to spend a week with some truly inspiring people... this years programme is made up of some amazing female artists that seek to blur the boundaries between Dance, Performance and Live Art!

So keep you eyes peeled!

PS Watch out for Thread Bare our January Dress Swap Party at CDS!

Chisenhale Dance Space - Artist led Initiative

On the Homelands weekend we invited a small group of artists to come to Chisenhale Dance Space amd see if they would like to create an artist led group. Chisenhale, with its vast and long history of artist led activity, has always been a space where artists have been free to try new ideas, research new parts of their practice as well as network and create with other artists, so what better way to stay true to that tradition that to start our very own group for 2010! Currently this group of artists consists of:

Yael Loewenstein / Maddy Wynne Jones / Joseph Mercier / Marrianne Machin / Leila McMillan/ Jiayu Chang / Eleanor Greenhalgh / Eleanor Sikorski / Katherina Radeva / Alice Mackenzie / Christina Jenson / Ewelina Kolaczek / Katsura Isobe / Justine Wheeler / Anna Pickering.

Each month this group of 15 artists will meet to show one another new work, discuss ideas and topics animating them at present as well as to administrate the group itself. The Chisenhale Office team are supporting them by giving them some free space to play, show and create each month as well as offering ad hoc sessions in business and industry advice when needed! Keep your eyes on our website to watch the progress of this group and we will let you know when you can come and watch something or indeed when new groups begin!

TV Dinners Festival Commissions

Next spring, from the 24th –28th March 2010 to be precise, we will be holding a DANCE FILM FESTIVAL. We are calling these evening events “TV DINNERS!” because it will be bite size evenings of film based fun, culture and subversive behaviour along with some lovely chances to EAT lovely local food!

Save the Dates and expect a mixture of new and commissioned works, ridiculous and hideous old dance movie's and some classic Chisenhale films pulled from the archive. A celebration of all things dance and filmy... we will be commissioning 5 short dance films over the spring so watch out for these £500 commissions in the new year!

2) Somali Week Festival – introducing our commissioned work

One of the Homeland Festival Commissions was awarded to KAYD, the producers of the annual Somali Week Festival in Bethnal Green. KAYD and Chisenhale have co-commissioned a piece of work for the festival and we are delighted to announce this partnership and the exciting piece of work it has produced:

‘Baqayo Roged’ is a drama produced by Abdirahman Yusuf Arten and features UK based Somali actors. This one-act play deals with some of the core principles of the Somali Week Festival namely: gender, equality and tolerance. CDS are providing the group studio space to make the work and access to a movement artist to allow the actors to explore the piece through new means.

After the play there will be a short discussion of the issues raised by the writer with Abdallah Haaij, Ali Ahmed Rabi Seenyo, and Su’ad Armiye,  Beeldaaje, Baarleeh. There will be also a performance from the Aar Band.

We hope to see some CDS regulars at this event, to celebrate this very exciting collaboration made possible by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

“Baqayo Roged” (One-act play) Wednesday, 28th October 2009
6-10pm | Fee £5 on the door. Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, London, E2 6HG

We have also successfully recruited a new Administrator since the last newsletter; Lauren Davis will arrive on the 8th of September.

So here comes the news...

2) Homelands Dance Festival: Artists Announced
3) Call for participants!
4) Classes at Chisenhale
5) Members AGM 15/9/09

Enjoy the rest of the holidays, we hope to see you at the space soon!

Bryony, Ana and the Team

1) Work-in-Progress Showing: Housewarming Residency Artist Tom Marshman

Tom is in the small studio, night and day, from 24th August to the 6th September 2009.

Tom would like to invite you to a work in progress showing of his new piece Suffering Images [working title] on the 4th September @ 7:30pm at CDS. Tom has been exploring the two unlikely subjects of The Passion (the last hours of Jesus Christ) and Pole Dancing. These ideas have been the itch that he couldn't scratch for far too long. Throughout this time he plans to explore the power of the enduring image of the crucifixion and its movement possibilities. Tom plans to recreate images of endurance using the pole dancing pole and personal narratives.

To book a place for Tom's work in progress showing please call the office as spaces are limited: 020 8981 6617

2) Homelands Dance Festival: Artists Announced

Homelands is our new, yearly festival, funded by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Arts and Events fund. The festival seeks to use dance as a tool to celebrate the diverse heritage, vibrant communities and rich history of our home borough as well as showcase the amazing dance work that happens within the space on a daily basis. The festival will engage the local community and artists alike with talks, taster sessions, videos and performances whist celebrating the richness of our borough East-End style with bingo, bunting and plenty of tea and cake fun! We have selected three artists to commission via application.

Each artist, through a series of collaborative workshops, will create a piece of work with a community group within the borough to be shown at the Homelands Dance Festival on the weekend of the 7th and 8th November 2009...

Joseph Mercier's project Age Gap
will work with an intergenerational group of gay men from Tower Hamlets. This project will use contemporary dance to celebrate all the different stages of gay life and get men of all ages talking and moving together to create a dance-piece. If you wish to sign up to be part of this group please call the office 020 8981 6617 or see below for more information.

Athina Vahla's project Fight Club will see her and a team of dancers join forces with a local boxing club to create a piece of work in collaboration. The project is inspired by the rituals of boxing, the similarities between boxing and dance and seeks to begin to allow the artist to create a new dance-sport vocabulary as part of an ongoing process.

Yael Loewenstein's project Voices of Change will see her teamed with a community of elders from the borough. She will create solos and duets that tell the stories of these individuals, voicing both challenge and delight in the evolving landscape of the locality.  The project will present a reflection of how citizens have absorbed, cultured and responded to an evolving community.

We will keep you posted on these projects along the way... SAVE THE FESTIVAL DATE 7th and 8th of November!

3) Call for Participants!
