1) Work-in-Progress Showing: Housewarming Residency Artist Tom Marshman

Tom is in the small studio, night and day, from 24th August to the 6th September 2009.

Tom would like to invite you to a work in progress showing of his new piece Suffering Images [working title] on the 4th September @ 7:30pm at CDS. Tom has been exploring the two unlikely subjects of The Passion (the last hours of Jesus Christ) and Pole Dancing. These ideas have been the itch that he couldn't scratch for far too long. Throughout this time he plans to explore the power of the enduring image of the crucifixion and its movement possibilities. Tom plans to recreate images of endurance using the pole dancing pole and personal narratives.

To book a place for Tom's work in progress showing please call the office as spaces are limited: 020 8981 6617

2) Homelands Dance Festival: Artists Announced

Homelands is our new, yearly festival, funded by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Arts and Events fund. The festival seeks to use dance as a tool to celebrate the diverse heritage, vibrant communities and rich history of our home borough as well as showcase the amazing dance work that happens within the space on a daily basis. The festival will engage the local community and artists alike with talks, taster sessions, videos and performances whist celebrating the richness of our borough East-End style with bingo, bunting and plenty of tea and cake fun! We have selected three artists to commission via application.

Each artist, through a series of collaborative workshops, will create a piece of work with a community group within the borough to be shown at the Homelands Dance Festival on the weekend of the 7th and 8th November 2009...

Joseph Mercier's project Age Gap
will work with an intergenerational group of gay men from Tower Hamlets. This project will use contemporary dance to celebrate all the different stages of gay life and get men of all ages talking and moving together to create a dance-piece. If you wish to sign up to be part of this group please call the office 020 8981 6617 or see below for more information.

Athina Vahla's project Fight Club will see her and a team of dancers join forces with a local boxing club to create a piece of work in collaboration. The project is inspired by the rituals of boxing, the similarities between boxing and dance and seeks to begin to allow the artist to create a new dance-sport vocabulary as part of an ongoing process.

Yael Loewenstein's project Voices of Change will see her teamed with a community of elders from the borough. She will create solos and duets that tell the stories of these individuals, voicing both challenge and delight in the evolving landscape of the locality.  The project will present a reflection of how citizens have absorbed, cultured and responded to an evolving community.

We will keep you posted on these projects along the way... SAVE THE FESTIVAL DATE 7th and 8th of November!

3) Call for Participants!

Age Gap - A dance project for gay men aged 16 to 116: A chance to learn dance, perform and meet new people.

Age Gap is an exciting opportunity to create a dance piece with Canadian choreographer Joseph Mercier and perform it at The Homelands Dance Festival 2009.

The project is for any and all gay men regardless of previous experience or abilities: maybe you’ve just come out to your parents, or maybe you remember when homosexuality was illegal; maybe you’re doing your A-levels, or maybe you’ve just retired; maybe your favourite will always be Sinatra, or maybe Lady Gaga is more your thing! Wherever you’re at, Age Gap hopes to celebrate all the different stages of gay life and get men of all ages talking and moving together.

There is no cost to participate in the project, but you must live or work in the Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Age Gap will meet at Chisenhale Dance Space on the following dates:
Meet & Greet: 22/9/09 6:30pm
Workshops: 29/9/09 – 02/11/09
Performance: 8/11/09
