Profile for Roberta Jean

Roberta Jean is a choreographer and Dance Artist based in London and Newcastle upon Tyne. She makes dance works for theatres, in site-specific and site-responsive contexts. She trained in Contemporary Dance and Ballet at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and specialized in Choreography and then went on to compleate an MA in Performance Making at Goldsmiths College. Roberta has been resident artist in Newcastle upon Tyne at Dance City, London in Shunt, Greenwich Foot Tunnel and Greenwich Dance Agency, Cardiff at Welsh Independent Dance, Marseille as part of COLINA and Vienna as part of DanceWeb in-conjunction with ImPulsTanz. She is also one of the founding curators of Chisenhale Art Club as featured in Time Out's Best of 2010

Roberta works in order to dismantle different cultural physical conventions, traditions and personas. She looks to the physicality of habitual patterns, routine and ritual, group frenzies and flocks. She embodies corporeal realities and rhythms from outside of the performance space. She has a strong interest in both trained and untrained bodies and what events cause the body to morph and change. She finds frames for power, fragility and exhaustion
