The Performer’s Body: On and Off Stage
29th January, 2-5pm, Chisenhale Dance Space
WORKSHOP LEADER: Niamh McKernan

In this practical workshop you will take a detailed look at how expanding your relationship with your body can support you both on and off stage. Using movement exercises specifically designed for performers, movement specialist and yoga teacher Niamh McKernan will help you take a close look at how understanding and connecting with your body can give you access to greater presence on stage as well as informing character-building, stagecraft and ensemble skill. This same understanding will in turn allow you to take care of your body and mind off stage: through mindful movement exercises you will be taught how to restore yourself in an efficient and simple way, helping you to navigate a successful and healthy career in the performing arts.

Director Laura Attridge and movement director Niamh McKernan join forces for this exciting workshop which will give you the opportunity to develop different ways of building a character from scratch, and to examine in more depth any techniques you have already encountered as a performer. This practical session will involve an exploration of both psychological and physical methods, giving you a variety of tools with which to approach your next role and inviting you to enrich your own craft as an individual artist. The afternoon will also include advice on how to most effectively bring these tools into a rehearsal room, a performance or an audition.

Script vs Score: Theatre for Opera Singers
26th February, 2-5pm, Chisenhale Dance Space

Director Laura Attridge leads this unique workshop which will challenge opera singers to work like actors, setting aside scores and picking up scripts instead. Working on pre-prepared theatre scenes and monologues, participants will rely on their acting ability alone, without the aid or interference of music, to create emotion, energy, rhythm, character and on-stage relationships. Over the course of the afternoon you will explore how a practical understanding of an actor’s craft, and the art of theatre, can inform and enhance your work as a singer, enriching what you have to offer on stage and in the rehearsal room. You will also go away with resources to help you continue to develop your knowledge and appreciation of theatre.

SUITABLE FOR: Opera Singers
LEVEL: Intermediate
TOTAL SPACES AVAILABLE: 15
TICKETS: £57
