This class will take you through the basics of contemporary dance, encouraging students to find freedom and pleasure in movement. Drawing from Release and floorwork techniques, and Contact Improvisation, we will progressively build up the pace and energy. Students will work on strengthening and softening the body, while developing awareness and endurance. This class will focus on the dancer’s relationship with breath, music, and space. Suitable for beginners and intermediate dancers wishing to get back to the basics.

Spring term will be co-taught by Sophie Thorpe & Vivian Triantafyllopoulou. We think there’s a great synergy between their teaching styles and are sure they will make a brilliant team.

About the Instructors:

Sophie Thorpe graduated from London Contemporary Dance School in July 2013 and went on to join Verve, the postgraduate performance company of Northern School of Contemporary Dance, graduating with Distinction. She has performed and taught across the UK and Europe and worked with a variety of established choreographers including Ben Duke, Lea Anderson, Tom Dale, Sarah Dowling and Jamaal Burkmar. Sophie is a co-founder of Feet off the Ground Dance, a collective that specialise in Contact Improvisation and Partnering.

Sophie has taught extensively across the UK, including BalletBoyz, The Place Adult Courses and Class Shorts, as a guest lecturer at London Contemporary Dance School and the Centre for Advanced Training scheme based at Laban, The Place and Dance4.

Vivian Triantafyllopoulou comes from Greece and graduated from Trinity Laban with a 1st class degree. She continued as a chosen member of the Akram Khan Experiment and then she joined Jasmin Vardimon 2 professional development course, where she performed a national tour with pieces from AΦΕ, Vinicius Salles and Jasmin Vardimon. Since then she has performed with Bittersuite Company, Vinicius Salles, Fernanda Prata, Ben Judd and more.
