Artist Community Gathering for Disabled and Neurodivergent Artists

Join us for a relaxed evening gathering and outdoor picnic

Independent artist Sam Burkett and CDS staff will share more about our work and ethos and answer your questions about joining the community. Then we’ll open into a participatory conversation about what artists need right now, and begin to collectively imagine what we could build together later this year.

There will be free pizza from our neighbours at Pizza Brixton, Roman Road, and a donation bar. Bring your questions, curiosity, and an appetite!

This gathering is specifically for community-building amongst disabled and neurodivergent artists. We also have an evening specifically for black & brown artists, and an evening open to all artists.

Accessibility

This event is held off-site at Chisenhale Studios in their ground-level education room, which has a canal-side outdoor patio area. The space is wheelchair accessible, accessed via a walkway that is Xcm wide. There is an accessible toilet on-site.

The indoor space will be softly lit, with different seating options, chairs and floor cushions. This event has a limited capacity of 20.

A further note on Access at CDS

Our imperfect home for the past 40 years has been on the second floor of a warehouse building, accessed by a staircase only. We regret that we cannot currently adequately support wheelchair users and those for whom stairs are a barrier. We are fighting for a redevelopment on our site that would create lift-access, but we are currently at the early stages of a several-years-long process.

We’re working in partnership with Poplar Union, Ugly Duck, Lab13 and Old Diorama Arts Centre to enable us to offer accessible space to members of our community on an ad hoc basis, whilst CDS still remains an inaccessible space.

About the Host

Sam Burkett (they/them) is a choreographer, director, teacher, writer, and performer who somehow also has a degree in Politics. They have been part of the CDS Artist Community since 2019. Known for being both highly creative and extremely sweaty, Sam’s work runs the emotional gamut from happy to sad to hungry to gay and it sits somewhere between dance, comedy, and theatre. Their choreography has been shown in both the UK and the US, and their solo, Crop Tops Make Me Feel Vulnerable, won the Best of Anything Goes Award at the 2018 Houston Fringe Festival. Sam also teaches, delivering classes and workshops in contemporary dance, physical theatre, and improvisation for professional dancers, actors, comedians, and young people, adapted for both disabled and non-disabled performers.
