‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ with Anja Borowicz
27 September 2019
“BODYWORKS” or “WORK IN THE HEAD”
Research Studio | 10am-1pm | £7 suggested donation
From notes on a hairdresser: a self-choreographed dancer performing with unruly matter, an aesthetician in a social contract of trust, a creative cutter in search of beauty. An unmoving and unmovable model reduced just to a head. Extended gaze and smiling effort. Heat, disinfectants and deadly-sharp objects.
This OPENLAB session draws on my research of everyday working gestures as an artistic proposition. A moment of engagement with another materiality, with an object (human or non-human, a massaged body or a building scaffold) becomes a space of material resonances and poetic metaphors. I call this moment object-gesture.
I will extract from the material of recorded gestures, dissected phrases of instructions and echoes of physical impacts. I propose we take a journey across these networks of material, emotional and metaphoric overlays. What will occur if we traverse physically, poetically and askew: mirroring, enacting and imagining? Can this working gesture inspired thinking lead us to new universal meanings and imaginary choreographies?
OPENLAB sessions are open to any performers: dancers, musicians, actors and anyone interested in presence and awareness in movement.
The facilitators of OPENLAB are also participants “in” the session and participants can propose their ideas for a future session. We are looking for proposals for facilitated sessions during the Spring and Summer Terms 2020. If you’d like to facilitate one of these sessions in the future come to one of our sessions to find out more or email Antonio de la Fe.
The OPENLAB sessions alternate between ‘White Canvas’ and ‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ sessions. You can see the full programme for the Autumn Term 2019 here.
The sessions function on a pay-what-you-can contribution basis to cover expenses and as an incentive for the facilitator of the session. We suggest a contribution of £7 for the 3-hour long sessions (‘Facilitated OPENLAB’ sessions) and of £5 for the 2-hour long ones (‘White Canvas’). Cash only.
About the Artist:
Anja Borowicz is an artist, collaborator and researcher based in London. Born during the communist regime, initially trained as an engineer then visual artist, Anja tries to think across disciplines and taxonomies, searching for new ways of meaning-making. In her art practice, she uses sculptural objects, moving image and soundscapes to create installations that enhance the embodied experience of the visitors.
For the past few years, Anja has been researching an idea of ‘everyday’ working gesture, which stimulated her interest in movement practices and social choreography. She has since been growing her embodied knowledge through martial arts, tai-chi, choreography labs and dance workshops. Anja’s current collaborations include working with a neuroscientist to stage object-gesture labs that invite public participation and input. Anja is a research candidate at the Royal College of Art.
