LENNIE – INERTIA (45 min)
FRIDAY 27 MAY, 2016
7:30pm | £5 – ticket link here
PLEASE NOTE: This show is 16+ and contains nudity and scenes of a sexual nature.
This piece has emerged out of a desire to address what feels like an inertia of present western politics.
We are frustrated.
How do we act? How do we move? How do we fight? We feel that any direction we move in, and any act we undertake, will only feed the very thing we hope to resist. So we are frozen. We are angry, but we know that late capitalism has adapted to benefit from our anger. It has made space for our rage and it fuels it, so that we in turn register our frustration in the appropriate forums: angry comments mean more web traffic and mined data on what we dislike.
This inertia is not only at a macro-political level, but also a corporeal experience: our stillness is not rest. Bodies cannot stop. Productivity is paramount. Every moment is a potential networking opportunity. And we become exhausted trying to maintain this inertia.
Playing with philosophical notions of nihilism, and psychoanalytic conceptions of the death drive, I question how self-destruction, failure and nihilism might provide answers for political subjectivity and agency.
How can I (re)embody politics and how can I find a way of moving (literally and figuratively) out of this inertia?
Are failure, self-destruction, and/or refusal my only options?
