This lab is a continuation of Becky’s research into how physical contact with materials can inform how we dance in contact with one another.
These classes are for people who haven’t danced in contact much or for a long time, those with expertise in the area, and everyone in between. They will support you to playfully question and practise how you can dance with others.
Through improvisational touch-based tasks, we will explore our quality of physicality and range of force, in relation to others and various materials (such as rope). This includes exploring how we might balance notions of strength, apprehension, and responsibility, with agency, inclusivity, lightness, and humour in contact practicing.
Becky Horne (she/her) is a UK based dancer and multidisciplinary artist, working as a performer, maker, researcher & facilitator. She is invested in collaborative processes and specialises in improvisation, contact & site-specific performance, working regularly outside & in galleries. She is interested in the embodied ways in which people engage with art, and influenced by somatic movement practices and her interests in sustainability, the sensory, materiality and play.
CLASS LAB is a class development scheme at Chisenhale Dance Space which helps experienced artists launch sustainable teaching practices through subsidised space, mentoring, and marketing support.
